It is with sadness that I inform the Club that Past Commodore Don Smith passed away in his sleep 14/15 JAN 2019.

THE FESTIVE SEASON

We had some pretty good turnouts over the festive season. There was no formal racing and everything was Rafferty's Rules. A lot of barging went on at the marks but it was all taken in good humour.

.

One of my highlights over this period was a day spent sailing Roy Shelton's Wee Nip. This is not a real hard boat to rig. To set up you:

stick the mast into its' hole in the deck, and

attach the main (only) sheet to the boom via a cleat to set your close hauled position.

Depending on the weather conditions you might adjust the foot tension via another cleat.

.

I believe that it could benefit from a another adjustment - a line to give downhaul on the clew to adjust the leach shape.

.

Nevertheless, it is a fun boat to sail, quite sparkling in performance when the wind suits and a ROCKET down-wind.

.

If anyone wanted to make one, Roy has the plans. They are a simple hull to construct. It uses a servo to adjust the sail. The sail has a cunning method to induce shape into it. All up I reckon you could have one in the water for under $100 if you already have a transmitter.

I suppose I had better catch up on my homework.

This was our last stern chaser of the year. If I recall rightly, the wind was light and dropped out causing a cancellation of races after Race 7.

.

David 'You can't beat the handicapper' Martin was going to pull out after Race 6 but decided to go for one more. David was ahead at the end of Race 6. If Grant Murray had won Race 7, he would have won the day on count-back. Congratulations, however, to David on his win.

.

Well done also to Grant Murray on a well-fought second place.

.

Brian Pennifold kept the A Class flag flying with a close third place.

.

John Lykke was just pipped by Brian. So close.

.

Bob Dare put in a good day with his Marblehead and wasn't that far back from the leaders.

.

Then came the peleton.

.

Geoff Smith led the peloton on count-back.

.

Graham Alcock was placed second in the peloton.

,

Bob ##$@?!!! Watson should have sailed at least one more race and he would have beaten the peloton.

.

Bob Tuohy tailed up the peloton.

.

David Draper sailed the safety boat.

.

Good fun. Funny to spectate.

RACING 05 DEC 2018

What a beautiful day to build sand castles! We even had a 4 year plus one day old to christen the sand pit. After digging around with an old tree branch and a stainless steel cup and then seeing the baby swallows he decided that he wanted to come out again. Hook 'em young before they get into computer games.

.

We had the usual Foci plus a couple of ring-ins. Congtatulations to Graham Alcock on his narrow Line Honours win.

.

A big well done to Bob Dare who, despite scoring as many firsts as Graham, finished in second place. Were it not for a couple of tactical errors close to the finish line, Bob could have knocked Graham down a spot. As usual Bob saved his worst for last. Probably losing concentration while anticipating his chiro visit.

.

Bob Tuohy once again proved that there is many a fine tune played on an old fiddle by rounding out the podium, two points behind Bob Dare.

.

Graham Edwards started off with a roar and, despite the appearance of the Line Honours score-line, sailed well through the day.

.

Adriaan Sakko had his moments. Unfortunately the breeze did not favour his boat on the day.

.

David Hyde sailed a couple of races and then dropped back to the spectator mode. Nothing wrong with that. Whatever floats your boat.

.

At the dam, I think I said that Bob Dare had won the Corrected Time. However, it turned out that I had incorrectly given him two discards. While the sand was being delivered I was unable to get times for the first two races. Hence the Corrected Time was only scored over Races 3 to 9 which only allowed for one discard.

.

Ta Da!! Well done Graham Edwards. A just reward for your improvement over the year.

.

To Bob Dare............Ya, Boo, Sucks. You should have gone for the extra race.  Second on Line Honours AND Corrected Time. Too bad Bob, but a great result.

.

Bob Tuohy also did a double by placing third on both finishes.

.

Graham Alcock just scraped in ahead of Adriaan Sakko.

.

Again, David Hyde provided the commentary.

.

So, how did all of this affect the Correction Factors?

.

Graham Alcock, being the gun sailor for the day, stayed exactly where he was.

.

Bob Dare shifted from 0.81 up to 0.91.

.

Graham Edwards was the big mover by shifting from .68 to 0.84.

.

Bob Tuohy sailed exactly to his Factor with respect to Graham Alcock and stayed right on his 0.89

.

Adriann Sakko is now rated at 0.83 which looks a bit high but that is how the numbers panned out. Future races will refine this.

.

David Hyde didn't sail enough races to get re-rated.

.

It is Marblehead/10 Rater on Saturday. I may not be there as I've got a grandson's birthday party to go to at some stage of the day. Whoopee!

I won't call it racing because there was only one person stupid enough to put his boat in the water. You need two fools to have a race.

.

We couldn't even have a barbecue because we didn't have enough nails to fix the sausages to the plate. I don't know how we would have managed to glue the sausages to the bread even if we had cooked them. Angus and Tillie would have had a ball chasing the sausages across the paddock.

FOCUS CHAMPIONSHIP 2018

SATURDAY 24 NOV 2018

A small, but determined, crew turned out for this, the first leg of the Focus Championship, after racing was blown out on the 21st. Conditions were fine with all of the subtle variations that are possible at times on the dam.

.

Congratulations to Bob Dare who best handled the conditions for a very solid win. He got a bit tired towards the end and slipped in a couple of seconds and then he had to go off for his afternoon nap. He still did enough to take the day. If he went for his nap one race earlier things would have been very close.

.

Well done to David Draper who started off a bit unsteadily but improved through the day. It's a bit harder without Graham's driving hand up the back of your jumper. Well sailed nevertheless.

.

Geoff Smith just plain had a shit day. We all get these occasionally. Still, you made it onto the podium.

If Bob Dare can win the Line Honours on Wednesday he will automatically take out Line Honours Champion, Focus, 2018. If someone else takes it out there will be a one-on-one at some stage to determine the winner.

.

Graham Alcock will be sailing his boat on Wednesday and so David Draper will not have a boat. David and whoever wins the Corrected Time on Wednesday will have a one-on-one, on Corrected Time, to determine the final result.

.

As a result of Saturday's results, David Draper, who was on a Correction Factor of 0.65 has jumped up to 0.73.

WEDNESDAY 28 NOV 2018

I don't know what it is with the Foci guys, but they seem to enjoy threesomes. A different trio from the Saturday competitors.

.

Congratulations to Bob Watson on completing a whole day without breaking anything winning Line Honours. An almost perfect copy book that was cleaned up on discards. Well done.

.

Graham Alcock sat on Bob's hammer waiting to pounce. He just left it a bit late. Too bad Graham, but well sailed.

.

Roy Shelton rounded out the podium with a reasonable performance from a boat that he was basically sailing cold being as how he is new to the class and had not had a chance to do even any basic tuning. He was also hampered with a winch that would not run out far enough for down-wind work. Nice sailing anyway Roy.

On Corrected Time, Roy Shelton and Graham Alcock tied and the count-back had to go down to second places before Roy came out ahead. Well done Roy, tough toe-nails Graham.

Bob Watson just managed to get onto the podium.

It is now up to the two Bobs (Dare and Watson) to agree on a date for a shoot-out for Line Honours. Don't take too long about it please.

Similarly, David Draper and Roy Shelton will have to come up with a date to decide the Corrected Time winner. With only 0.02 between them it should be an interesting day.

.

Just another thing to note - Graham Alcock's Correction Factor has jumped from 0.83 up to 0.92. I'm sorry Graham, I won't fiddle with your rig again.
